Trump Orders Demolition of White House East Wing
Construction crews started tearing down portions of the building on Monday, with two administration officials informing BBC's US partner CBS that the entire structure will be demolished by the weekend.
This demolition marks a major development in the ongoing construction project, which was initially announced over the summer.
Trump had previously assured the public that the ballroom expansion would not "interfere with the current building."
Trump has denied accusations that he was not forthcoming about the scale of the project. In a statement to reporters on Wednesday, he defended his transparency, claiming, "I think we've been more transparent than anyone's ever been."
However, opposition politicians have escalated their criticism as the scope of the work becomes clearer.
Democratic members of the US House of Representatives have sent a letter to the president expressing concerns over the transparency of the project and requesting various documents related to the demolition.
Environmentalists and preservationists have also argued that the project should have been subject to more scrutiny from the beginning.
Despite these concerns, the White House is exempt from the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, which typically mandates public reviews for projects affecting historic buildings.
