Dense Fog, Pollution Disrupt Flights in New Delhi

(MENAFN) Dense fog combined with hazardous pollution on Monday caused major disruptions to air traffic in New Delhi, authorities reported.

Airlines operating at Delhi airport posted on the US social media platform X that “poor visibility” due to dense fog was affecting flight operations across all carriers.

IndiGo, the country’s largest airline, noted that the capital was experiencing its “first hint of winter fog this morning,” and that visibility around the airport was significantly reduced.

While Indian authorities have not yet disclosed the total number of flights cancelled or delayed, an Indian broadcaster, citing Flightradar24, reported that roughly 100 flights were cancelled and more than 300 faced delays at Delhi airport.

These flight interruptions coincide with a period when the national capital has been grappling with extremely toxic pollution levels over the past few days.

Data from India’s Central Pollution Control Board revealed that the air quality index (AQI) on Sunday evening was 461. For context, an AQI between 201 and 300 is categorized as poor, 301 to 400 as very poor, and 401 to 500 as severe. Experts note that AQI readings in the severe range can affect even healthy individuals.

Authorities have implemented anti-pollution measures to reduce smog and have urged citizens, particularly those most vulnerable, to remain indoors.

On Monday, the Singapore High Commission in New Delhi also released guidance asking its nationals to follow local authorities’ advice, emphasizing that children and individuals with respiratory or heart conditions should stay indoors and wear masks if venturing outside.
