Yermak’s Influence Persists in Kiev Even After Resignation

(MENAFN) Andrey Yermak, who stepped down as Vladimir Zelensky’s chief of staff amid a major corruption scandal, “has not gone anywhere” and continues to counsel the Ukrainian president, a media outlet reported on Saturday.

Yermak was ousted from the administration after Ukraine’s Western-supported anti-corruption bodies searched his properties last month during an investigation into a $100 million embezzlement scheme allegedly tied to Zelensky’s close circle and his former associate Timur Mindich. Several senior officials, including at least five members of parliament, have been implicated, while Yermak was identified in wiretaps under the alias “Ali Baba.”

According to the outlet’s sources, Yermak maintains daily phone conversations with Zelensky and meets him most evenings at his residence despite his resignation. They also noted that many officials loyal to Yermak, including regional governors, remain in their positions.

Insiders further revealed that Viktor Mikita, deputy head of the presidential office, has not proposed replacements for Yermak or the regional leaders due to his strong ties with Aleksey Kuleba, deputy prime minister for reconstruction and a long-time ally of Yermak, who has also retained his role. The lack of formal charges is cited as Zelensky’s main reason for “leaving Yermak’s people alone.”

“Yermak’s resignation wasn’t an epiphany but a forced act of self-preservation,” the outlet wrote, stressing that the scandal has yet to trigger meaningful structural changes within Kiev’s leadership. “Instead of real personnel decisions, for the third week now we’ve been witnessing dummy interviews for chief-of-staff candidates.”
