Benin Votes in Presidential Election Amid Predicted Two-Horse Race

(MENAFN) Voters in Benin are casting ballots on Sunday in a presidential election widely described by analysts as having a largely predetermined outcome, according to reports.

The contest is primarily between two candidates: Finance Minister Romuald Wadagni, who represents the ruling coalition and is considered the clear frontrunner, and opposition figure Paul Hounkpe.

Wadagni’s position has reportedly been strengthened following political instability earlier in the year, including an attempted coup in December, which has shaped the broader political environment leading into the vote.

The race has also been affected by exclusions within the opposition. A prominent opposition leader, Renaud Agbodjo of The Democrats, was barred from running after his party failed to secure the required parliamentary backing, limiting the field to a smaller set of candidates.

According to election authorities, nearly 8 million citizens are eligible to vote across more than 17,000 polling stations nationwide. To win outright, a candidate must secure an absolute majority—50% plus one of the votes cast. If no candidate achieves this threshold, a second round is scheduled for May 10.

Observers from the ECOWAS have been deployed to monitor the electoral process, led by former Ghanaian President Nana Akufo-Addo, as part of regional efforts to ensure transparency and stability during the vote.

The election is being closely watched, although expectations among analysts suggest limited competition given the current political landscape.
