Iran Threatens to Shut Key Shipping Lanes in Response to US Blockade
The Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters stated that it would consider such actions in response to ongoing restrictions affecting Iranian maritime activity. Major General Ali Abdollahi, the commander of the headquarters, said in a statement carried by state media that continued US measures would have serious consequences.
He said that if what he described as “aggressive and terrorist US” actions persist, including “illegal maritime blockade actions and creates insecurity for Iranian commercial vessels and oil tankers,” they would be treated as “a prelude to violating the ceasefire.”
Abdollahi further warned that if the situation does not change, Iran’s armed forces would prevent any form of imports or exports from passing through key waterways, including the Gulf, the Sea of Oman, and the Red Sea.
The US has reportedly introduced a naval blockade around Iranian ports following recent indirect talks in Pakistan, which ended without reaching an agreement over the weekend.
Iranian authorities have also claimed that more than 3,300 people have been killed in US-Israeli airstrikes since February 28.
In response, Tehran has carried out missile and drone attacks targeting Israel as well as locations in Iraq, Jordan, and Gulf states hosting US military forces, prior to a two-week ceasefire announced last week.
