Iran Says Oil Tanker Reaches Its Waters After Passing Strait of Hormuz

(MENAFN) A large Iranian crude oil tanker has entered Iranian territorial waters after passing through the Strait of Hormuz, despite ongoing US claims of a maritime blockade, according to Iranian media reports on Wednesday.

Iranian news outlet reported that the vessel, described as a supertanker capable of carrying around 2 million barrels of crude oil, traveled through international waters and the strategic strait with its tracking system active and “without any concealment.”

The report did not include any immediate response from US authorities.

The development comes after US military officials said they had effectively halted maritime trade linked to Iran. Commander of United States Central Command stated earlier that US forces had “completely halted” sea-based commerce to and from Iran.

CENTCOM said it began enforcing a maritime blockade on Monday targeting all vessels entering or leaving Iranian ports, and that the measures were being applied broadly to ships of all nationalities operating in the Gulf and the Gulf of Oman.

The command also said the operation would not interfere with freedom of navigation for ships transiting the Strait of Hormuz bound for non-Iranian destinations.

The escalation followed recent indirect talks between the United States and Iran held in Pakistan aimed at ending the ongoing conflict that began on February 28. However, those negotiations reportedly failed to produce an agreement.
