US Lawmakers Demand Swalwell Resign After Allegations Derail Governor Bid

(MENAFN) Several US lawmakers have called for the resignation of Congressman Eric Swalwell following sexual harassment and assault allegations that led him to suspend his bid for governor of California.

Republican Congresswoman Nancy Mace said on social media that Swalwell should step down from Congress, arguing that he should be expelled if he does not resign voluntarily.

Her comments followed Swalwell’s announcement that he was ending his gubernatorial campaign after reports surfaced detailing allegations of misconduct.

Media investigations cited claims from a former staffer who accused him of sexual assault during incidents in which she said she was unable to consent due to intoxication. Separate reporting also referenced allegations from other women involving explicit messages and images.

Swalwell has denied all accusations, describing them as “absolutely false,” and said he intends to challenge the claims.

He also issued an apology to his family, supporters, and staff for past personal mistakes while stressing that he would defend himself against what he called serious and unfounded allegations.

The allegations have intensified political pressure on Swalwell, with some lawmakers now publicly demanding his removal from Congress.
